Bedford stops the AA Pioneer win streak

Game Date
Dec 18, 2015
Score
MULES: 7
AA PIONEER: 4

Early in the 2007-08 season Bedford won a 3-2 game against Ann Arbor Pioneer.  In the seven seasons since then, Pioneer won every game, all 12 of them.  That streak came to an abrupt end with a thrilling 7-4 Mule victory.  Jake Stark led the way, scoring four Bedford goals and assisting on another.

The Mules jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and then coasted a bit too much in the third period.  Pioneer got on the board via a penalty shot late in the second, then pumped in a couple of goals midway through the final 17 minutes.  Suddenly that 5-0 Bedford advantage was 5-3 with 7:39 remaining.  Head Coach Doug Smalley called a time-out to hopefully settle the team down.

Stark responded 48 seconds later with his fourth goal, assisted by Matt Dulbs, and the lead was back up to three.   Just twelve seconds after the Bedford goal Pioneer scored.  With the shaky lead again down to two, the Mules added an insurance goal by David Jeffers, assisted by Dale Davis and Dulbs.

After Bedford took a penalty with 4:02 remaining in the game, Pioneer pulled their goalkeeper and played the balance of the game with an empty net.  For the Mules, shot after shot just missed, keeping the crowd on edge as the clock ran down.  At the other end Noah Smalley was called on to make several key saves, and he responded perfectly.

Going back to the first period, successive goals by Stark, assisted by Bobby Bernath, Ethan Aubry from Stark, and Jacob Schulty from Bob Bobroski put the Mules up 3-0 six minutes into the game.  The Pioneers had their first shot on goal during a power play about eight minutes into the first period.  Stark had both Bedford second period goals, one unassisted and the other assisted by Aubry and David Box.
