Girls Varsity Soccer vs. MONROE CUSTER FIELD

Game Date
May 21, 2015
Score
MULES: 3
MONROE @ CUSTER FIELD: 2

The Bedford Girls Varsity soccer team concluded its 2015 regular season with a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win at Monroe on Thursday evening.

The host Trojans scored twice in less than a 50 second span (31:50 and 32:38) in the first half with Sophia Mapes recording both goals.

The Kicking Mules turned up the intensity and scored with exactly one minute left before intermission as senior Chelsea Bauders' corner kick bounced around in the box before classmate Taya Bailey tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the campaign.

Monroe held an 8-7 edge in shots attempted through the first 40 minutes despite Bedford having a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Kicking Mules played a more complete second half out-shooting the Trojans 18-5 along with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Neither team scored in the first 30 minutes of the second half before another Bedford corner kick resulted in the tying goal.  Once again Bauders took the corner kick and Bailey sent a header past Monroe goalkeeper Anna Roman at the 72:42 mark.

The Kicking Mules continued to apply the offensive pressure and Bauders took another corner kick with just under a minute remaining.  Her well placed corner was going in at the far post but a Trojan defender tried to play the ball which still ended up in the back of the net.

Bauders was credited with her second goal of the season, which also happened to be her second game-winning goal with both coming against Monroe.

Despite the strong offensive performance by the Kicking Mules, the foul calls were not very even with Bedford being called for four in the second half to one for Monroe.  In fact the final foul on the Mules occurred with 10.1 seconds remaining.  A Bedford defender fell down while trying to keep a Monroe forward, who was facing the sideline and not having any chance of shooting, mysteriously being awarded a penalty kick.

Bedford goalkeeper Grace Brown rose to the occasion stopping Mapes' attempt for a hat trick with her sixth save of the match.

Roman finished with nine saves, including seven in the second half, for Monroe.

Playing a strong game on the backline for Bedford were senior Erin Jacobs, juniors Sadie Oswald and Kortney Sheeder and freshman Kate Chuhy.

The Kicking Mules will take a 5-12-1 record into Tuesday's MHSAA District quarterfinal match at Wyandotte Roosevelt.
